Endometriosis

Overgrowth of Endometrial Tissues

What is Endometriosis?

Endometriosis is the condition when the tissues that grow on the internal lining (Endometrium) of the uterus start growing on other organs of the female reproductive system.

The tissue that forms the internal lining of the uterus is called Endometrium. Sometimes, cells like those in the Endometrium grow outside the uterus, often on the fallopian tubes and tissue covering the uterus and ovaries.

This overgrown tissue breaks down with a menstrual cycle just like the tissues of endometrium, but they can't leave the body through blood due to its misplaced position.

These tissues cause further irritation and inflammation to surrounding tissues, leading to patients experiencing common symptoms like pain and heavy menstrual bleeding.

Endometriosis is very common in young women. Reportedly, about 10% of women of 16-36 years age are affected by the disease worldwide with 25% patients seeing no symptoms.

Is Endometriosis is serious condition?

Endometriosis doesn't necessarily cause infertility in all scenarios. Around 1 in every 2 women with endometriosis is affected by infertility to some extent. There are many women who still have the ability to get pregnant naturally, despite having the condition.

At its earliest stage, patients usually report pain and excessive menstrual bleeding. But at this point, they still reserve their fertility. In more serious cases, the tissue overgrowth may reach the pelvis and bladder leading to painful bowel movements.

Excessive buildup on the fallopian tubes can cause blockage in the tube. At this point, the fertility of the woman is immensely compromised since the blockage in the fallopian tube restricts movement of both sperms and eggs.

In even more critical cases, cysts start forming on the ovaries and adhesive tissues build up surrounding it. This is a very serious stage considering that now patients suffer not only from abnormal levels of hormones but also from irregularities in ovulation.

In critical cases, it may totally halt the ovulation cycle, which is called anovulation. Anovulation means that the female body doesn't produce healthy oocytes anymore. Absence of healthy eggs definitely makes a woman infertile.
