Oligozoospermia

Low sperm count in semen samples

What is Oligozoospermia?

Low sperm count is the medical condition when an adult male is found to have less sperm in semen than normal. Typically a volume of 15 million per mL is considered the threshold. Volume of less than 5 million/mL is considered severe oligozoospermia.

Low sperm count is one of the most common male infertility conditions. While it is still possible to have successful pregnancy naturally despite having Oligozoospermia, deficiency of healthy sperm becomes a potential factor for infertility in many men.

What factors cause low sperm count?

Hormone Deficit

Hormones like Testosterone, FSH and LH control the cycle of sperm growth. Deficit in either of them can disrupt the balance and impede the process of sperm production. Reduced hormone levels imply reduced testicular function, meaning reduced sperm production. For many patients coming to our clinic, hormonal imbalance is the primary factor as seen causing deficiency in sperm production.

Blockage

Presence of blockage/clotting in the male ejaculatory system can be a cause of oligospermia. Obstructions can lead to the case when only a small fraction of the available sperms can reach the urethra, thereby causing a deficit of total sperm count in semen. At AFIC, a surgery is prescribed as a complete remedy. According to the patient, Surgical Sperm Retrieval can also be prescribed.

Varicocele

Another very common reason for oligozoospermia is Varicocele. This is the condition when veins in the testicles are enlarged due to malfunctioning of valves in these veins. A big majority of patients coming to Andaman who were diagnosed with varicocele were also diagnosed with lower testosterone and elevated scrotal temperature. Which could be the primary reason for lower sperm production in them.

External factors

External factors like exposure to radiation and chemical substances can disturb sperm growth cycle. Living in a highly polluted atmosphere increases chances of developing infertility conditions. That's also the reason why coming to Andaman for your treatment may help you tremendously. AFIC provides the best treatment for Low Sperm Count at a reasonable cost, right in the middle of the serene environment of Andaman.
