Hysteroscopy

Hysteroscopy technique for diagnosis and minimally-invasive surgery

What is Hysteroscopy Technique?

Hysteroscopy is a procedure which allows doctors to look into the internal part of various female reproductive organs like Uterus and Cervix, without having to make incisions on skin. With the help of this procedure, it becomes possible to physically detect many existing structural abnormalities of the uterus and cervix.

When accompanied by surgery, Hysteroscopy can also be used to treat various conditions like Polyps, Fibroids and several endometrial defects. Hysteroscopy is a minimally invasive procedure which enables precise diagnosis and easy treatment of a number of uterine factor infertility conditions with minimum risks and discomfort of the patient.

How is a Hysteroscopy performed?

Hysteroscope Insertion

The procedure uses a device called Hysteroscope, which is carefully inserted into the vagina to reach the uterus up inside, passing through the cervix. The hysteroscope is a thin flexible tube similar to a catheter, which has a video camera attached at the end. The device also has a narrow duct through which liquid and gas can be pumped.

Uterus Preparation

At the initial step of hysteroscopy, gas is pumped into the uterus to inflate the uterus so that its surroundings can be clearly visible. The camera projects live footage to a monitor screen on which the doctors can see the internal chamber of the uterus. In most cases, medicines are prescribed to the patient beforehand to lighten the cervical mucus improving mobility of the hysteroscope.

Minimally-invasive Operation

Hysteroscopy also allows doctors to conduct minor surgeries on the internal lining of the uterus. To conduct an operation, small instruments are attached on the head of the hysteroscope. Miscellaneous instruments can be installed to perform a series of operations (such as incise, excise, dissect, resect) on endometrial tissues and remove fibroids, polyps and blockages.

How is Hysteroscopy procedure implemented?

As a diagnostic procedure, hysteroscopy can not only be used to detect intrauterine conditions, but it is also used to verify and confirm the presence of uterine factor infertility conditions already diagnosed by other methods such as blood test, USG or X-Ray.

With the help of hysteroscopy, doctors can diagnose :

  • Presence of polyps and fibroids.
  • Bleeding from isthmus of uterus and fallopian tubes and endometrial tissue.
  • Inflammation inside the uterus.
  • Presence of scar tissues and intrauterine adhesions.
  • Uterine septums.
  • Clotting and blockage inside the uterus.

As a surgical method, hysteroscopy allows doctors to perform various operations on the internal lining of the uterus, without any need for making incisions on the skin. This non-invasive technique presents a comparatively painless treatment alternative for patients.

Some of the surgical operations that can be performed using Hysteroscopy are :

  • Endometrial biopsy.
  • Incision of septum and excision of polyps.
  • Removing foreign bodies.
  • Clearing clots and removing blockages
  • Endometrial Ablation and dissection.
  • Removing polyps and fibroids.

Advantages of Hysteroscopy

  • Painless and Safe: Hysteroscopy allows for treatment of various tissue deformities on the inside of the uterus without taking an incisive and rather painful approach.
  • Minimally-invasive Approach: Hysteroscopy is a minimally invasive technique, in which patients can obtain results without any need for complex invasive methods making it painless.
  • Better Scope: Hysteroscopy provides access to the internal part of reproductive organs like Cervix and Uterus, without the need for touching external layers, which makes the procedure very safe.
  • High Success Rates: At AFIC, we always incorporate precise instruments and latest technologies in conducting treatments, which makes Hysteroscopy a very successful procedure.
